FOMC Week After A Hotter Core CPI Print Locks In The Hike Debate

The political story this week is the committee, not a speech. August consumer prices came in with a core print that was firmer than the street wanted. Headline looked orderly. Core did not. That is enough to turn a hold camp into a minority. The Federal Open Market Committee meets with energy still in the tape and with the front end already treating a move as the base case.

The mechanism is mandate, not mood. A central bank that spent the year on pause now faces a second round risk from the barrel. Producer prices already showed energy doing the work at the wholesale level. Core consumer prices then refused to stay quiet. That combination is why officials who wanted more data no longer have a clean excuse to wait. Language can still sound data dependent. The data already arrived.

Oil is the political problem inside the inflation print. A Gulf shock that lifts diesel and gasoline shows up first in headline. It shows up later in core if firms pass the freight and the power bill into tickets and rents. The committee cannot pretend that path is theoretical while the pump is still the household story. A hike that looks like a reaction to crude is still a hike. Markets will price the reaction function, not the apology.

There is a second layer. Longer dated yields already sold when a Treasury buyback failed to cap the long end. The front end is now doing the same job for policy. If the statement leans hawkish, the dollar and the two year will do the talking. If the statement leans through the energy shock, the market will treat the pause as a political choice and sell duration again. Either way the press conference is the event. The vote is the fact.

Watch three things. Watch whether the statement treats energy as a one off or as a medium term problem. Watch whether the projections still show another move after this meeting. Watch the long end more than the equity bounce that followed Friday’s oil fade. The committee will not be priced as a weather report. It will be priced as a central bank that just lost the easy hold.
